Who Is a Good Candidate for Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening is a treatment that can help just about anyone who is unhappy with the color of their teeth. That said, it’s best suited for patients that saw their teeth become discolored due to stains; while it can help patients who are suffering from discoloration due to age or certain medications, it works better for those who stained their teeth through food or drink.

How Does Teeth Whitening Work?

There are two main methods of teeth whitening, take-home and in-office. However, both work in essentially the same way. A personalized whitening gel can be placed onto the teeth, and a specialized light will be used to “activate” it. This is done several times until the desired level of whiteness is reached.

Take-Home Teeth Whitening

Take-home teeth whitening comes in a kit that can be purchased at our office. The whitening gel can be placed onto customized plastic trays—these are worn on the teeth for around an hour at a time over the course of 2 or 3 weeks.

In-Office Teeth Whitening

In-office teeth whitening can be done over the course of a single appointment, which makes it ideal for those patients who want to see results quickly. If you need your teeth to look good for a special occasion, like a wedding or job interview, this is generally the best option for you. Instead of using trays, we’ll apply the whitening gel directly to the teeth for faster results.

Tips for Maintaining Your Brighter Smile

After you’ve invested in your brighter smile, you’ll likely want to do what you can to maintain it. You can come in for the occasional touch-up when necessary, but what you do outside of our office matters too.

Avoid those foods that can contribute to discoloration, like coffee, tea, and red wine. If you smoke, you might also want to consider cutting back. Daily hygiene is also important—brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash can stop food from discoloring your smile.
